Frequently asked questions

How much extra herringbone parquet should I order?

For herringbone parquet, allow 10–15% for cutting waste, as more cuts are needed along the edges of the pattern than with straight-laid plank parquet. In small or awkwardly shaped rooms you may need slightly more.

What are A and B boards in herringbone parquet?

Herringbone parquet consists of mirror-image A and B boards, with the tongues and grooves on opposite sides. They are laid alternately to create the pattern, so the floor needs equal quantities of both types.

Is herringbone parquet glued down or floated?

Herringbone parquet is usually fully glued to the subfloor, as the small boards are not stable enough when floated. Gluing down also gives lower footfall noise and better heat transfer with underfloor heating.

Is herringbone parquet suitable for a small room?

Yes, the herringbone pattern works in both small and large rooms. Shorter, narrower boards look better in a small room, while longer, wider boards suit large open-plan spaces and emphasise the scale of the pattern.
